Absolute blinder last night (Mala at Inhale). Big up Submerged crew .. and also to Sydney folks for getting off their arses and coming down to the bass fest. I reckon that night was a little bit of history in the making. Looks like people are waking up to these wicked sounds – the place was rammed, it took a ridiculously long time to get a drink at the bar. That Richie Spice Marijuana remix is getting a well deserved rinsing … who done it? It’s a white label still I think. .. Steve Spacek’s understated mic duties were perfect.

[ edit ] I googled a bit, that dubplate is Burnin’ by DMZ’ Coki.

Mala, who’s playing this Thursday at Inhale, is in NZ at the moment and has done an interview with my mate Martin from Ruffneck Souljah ..

Solaa tore up a packed Beach Road last night .. brilliant. Simon from Rastawookie and P-Bass Expressway guested on trumpet and bongos for most of their set too. And Janny – lead singer of Rastawookie and one of Sydney’s top reggae/soul vocalists – joined in for a verse as well. I love gigs like that where there’s a jam going on and artists jumping up to collaborate. That’s what live music is all about .. the crowd loved it and were screaming for more when the Beach Road’s midnight curfew came around. (Someone should carpet-bomb the surrounding neighbourhood with valium.)

Meanwhile … 1Xtra’s Bass Awards have duly congratulated the dnb heavyweights in the 06 … No big surprises. A bit disappointing TC trumped Benny Page for best breakthrough producer.

Cyclic Defrost have an interview with Kid Koala, where he talks about the arduous nature of sample-based production and using turntablism to create music:

“Back on the last album I wanted to do a ska track. That was something that took like several weeks to find all the notes and then bend them into the harmonies I was hearing. Then I realised, ‘You know what, you can just get a reggae band and do that in one afternoon’. So let me just put it this way, it’s the most tedious way of working ever. The only more tedious craft would be animated film. Sometimes I’ll go and see some guy who just plays a wine glass for his show and then I’m just green with envy.”

And it looks like it’ll be a big year for Blak Twang: two new singles and a new LP .. a re-release of 96′s seminal, but extremely rare, Dettwork Southeast LP.

mala3b.jpgThose nice lads at Southern Steppa have arranged for Mala (Digital Mystikz) to play at next week’s Inhale (29 March). That’s also the day after my birthday. If you don’t know who Digital Mystikz are, then get to know.

Dubstep massive (or in Sydney’s case, mini) represent.

Click on the little flier to see it fullsize.

Solaa in Auckland

When I was in Auckland I got the chance to see the band Solaa a couple of times. Mad hiphop/soul/funk vibes, and they’re playing the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi this Thursday night. A must-see. One of the tracks can be downloaded from their site.

Despite a bit of rain, the DnBBQ last weekend was a classic. When we got there, Agency Dub Collective were playing the outside stage. Great live dub sound and some timely political comments sprinkled through the lyrics. Downstairs, Typhonic played a scorcher of a set, turntable-trickery-enhanced drum’n'bass while SPEx tore up the mic.

The highlight was Hermitude. Some wicked new material: they had the crowd completely on lock. Those boys have real talent and deserve to go far …

Hectic weekend ahead. This Friday my mate SPEx MC’s crew The Hook support NZ hip hop act Four Corners at the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi. The next day in Randwick the Future Music Festival brings a slew of international big names – the biggest of which is Carl Cox – to the Royal Randwick Racecourse; Kobra Kai will be reppin’ Sydney .. afterwards heading down to the DnBBQ and then on Sunday making my way up to Katoomba to DJ at Tres Elis .. random.
